3-47th Infantry Regiment
History

THE 47TH REGIMENT WAS FIRST ORGANIZED ON 1 JUNE 1917 AS COMPANY C, 47TH INFANTRY AT SYRACUSE, NEW YORK. THE 47TH REGIMENT’S MOST IMPORTANT ENGAGEMENT OF WORLD WAR I TOOK PLACE AT SERGY ON THE OURCO IN JULY OF 1918. AT THE WAR’S END THE REGIMENT SERVED AS AN OCCUPATION FORCE AT COLBLENZ, AUSTRIA. DEACTIVATED IN 1921 AND REACTIVATED IN 1940 AS PART OF THE 9TH INFANTRY DIVISION, THE 47TH UNDERWENT AMPHIBIOUS TRAINING. IN NOVEMBER 1942, THE REGIMENT LANDED AT SAFI, FRENCH MOROCCO WHERE IT HELPED MOP UP STUBBORN VICHY RESISTANCE. THEY THEN MOVED WEST AND TOOK PART IN ONE OF THE FIERCEST BATTLES OF THE WAR, EL GUETTAR. ON 11 JUNE 1944, THE 47TH LANDED AT UTAH BEACH AS PART OF THE NORMANDY INVASION. THE REGIMENT THEN PUSHED TO THE RHINE WHERE THEY SECURED THE BRIDGEHEAD AT REMAGEN. PFC CARL SHERIDAN WAS AWARDED THE CONGRESSIONAL MEDAL OF HONOR FOR HIS ACTIONS AT FREZENBERG CASTLE. THE WAR ENDED FOR THE 47TH WITH THE HISTORIC MEETING OF THE RUSSIANS AT THE MULDE RIVER. THE REGIMENT THEN TOOK OVER DACHAU CONCENTRATION CAMP AND SERVED AS AN OCCUPATION FORCE UNTIL DEACTIVATION IN 1946. ACTIVATED AGAIN IN 1947, THE 47TH REGIMENT RETURNED TO GERMANY TO SERVE WITH NATO FORCES. THEY RETURNED STATESIDE IN 1956, AND IN JANUARY 1967 WERE DEPLOYED TO THE REPUBLIC OF VIETNAM. WHILE SERVING THERE THE REGIMENT DEVELOPED THE TACTICS OF RIVERRINE WARFARE AND WERE INSTRUMENTAL IN THREE OF THE 9TH DIVISION’S BIGGEST ACHIEVMENTS, FINDING THE WAR’S LARGEST CACHE, STAMPING OUT THE ENEMY ATTACKS AT LONG BINH DURING THE TET OFFENSIVE AND STOPPING THE SECOND WAVE INVASION ATTEMPT IN SOUTHERN SAIGON. IT WAS WHILE THE REGIMENT WAS IN VIETNAM THAT GEORGE C. LANG WAS AWARDED THE CONGRESSIONAL MEDAL OF HONOR. WITH A TOTAL OF 24 REGIMENTAL STREAMERS, 8 PRESIDENTIAL UNIT CITATIONS, 3 VALOR OUS UNIT CITATIONS, 1 MERITORIOUS UNIT COMMEDATION AND 8 FOREIGN CITATIONS OF HONOR FOR GALLANTRY, THE 47TH INFANTRY REGIMENT IS THE MOST DECORATED UNIT IN THE UNITED STATES ARMY. THE 47TH INFANTRY REGIMENT WAS ASSIGNED TO THE 192ND INFANTRY BRIGADE AND CARRIES ON INTO ITS 89TH YEAR.

ON 27 APRIL 2006 THE 3RD BATTALION, 47TH INFANTRY WAS ASSIGNED TO THE 192ND INFANTRY BRIGADE. On 11 January 2011 THE 3RD BATTALION, 47TH INFANTRY WAS ASSIGNED

TO THE 198th INFANTRY BRIGADE, STILL COMMITED TO EXCELLENCE PRODUCING THE WORLD’S GREATEST INFANTRYMEN WIYH TOUGH ARDOUS TRAINING.
