THE 1ST BATTALION, 50TH INFANTRY WAS CONSTITUTED 15 MAY 1917 AS, A COMPANY, 50TH INFANTRY, AND WAS ORGANIZED 1 JUNE 1917 AT SYRACUSE, NEW YORK. THE 50TH INFANTRY WAS ASSIGNED 31 JULY 1918 TO THE 20TH INFANTRY DIVISION AND WAS RELIEVED FROM THE 20TH INFANTRY DIVISION ON 28 FEBRUARY 1919.

THE BATTALION WAS AGAIN RECONSTITUTED INTO THE REGULAR ARMY ON 8 JANUARY 1942 AS A COMPANY, 50TH ARMORED INFANTRY AND ASSIGNED TO THE 6TH ARMORED DIVISION.

IN EUROPE, AS PART OF GENERAL PATTON’S VAUNTED THIRD ARMY, THE BATTALION PARTICIPATED IN THE CAMPAIGNS OF NORMANDY, NORTHERN FRANCE, RHINELAND, ARDENNES-ALSACE AND CENTRAL EUROPE AND WAS AWARDED THE FRENCH CROIX DE GUERRE WITH PALM.

THE BATTALION WAS AGAIN REDESIGNATED ON 1 JULY 1963, AS THE 1ST BATTALION, 50TH INFANTRY AND SERVED WITH THE 2ND ARMORED DIVISION. ON 1 SEPTEMBER 1967 THE BATTALION WAS RELIEVED FROM ASSIGNMENT AND WAS ASSIGNED TO II CORPS AS GENERAL RESERVE.

THE BATTALION PARTICIPATED IN TEN MAJOR CAMPAIGNS WHILE IN VIETNAM AND F COMPANY EARNED A VALOROUS UNIT AWARD FOR ACTIONS IN BINH DOUNG PROVINCE.

ON 16 DECEMBER 1970, THE BATTALION WAS REASSIGNED TO THE 2ND ARMORED DIVISION AND WAS A PART OF THAT DIVISION UNTIL 15 MARCH 1983 WHEN IT WAS RELIEVED, ON 28 AUGUST 1987; THE HEADQUARTERS WAS TRANSFERRED TO TRAINING AND DOCTRINE COMMAND AND WAS ACTIVATED AT FORT BENNING, GEORGIA.

Mission

1ST BATTALION, 50TH IN TRANSFORMS CIVILIANS INTO DISCIPLINED INFANTRYMEN WHO EMBODY THE WARRIOR ETHOS IN ORDER TO SUPPORT AN ARMY AT WAR.
