Commander's Biography

LTC Justin C. Amburgey enlisted in 1991 and received his commission as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Infantry from the U.S. Army Officer Candidate School in 2001.

His previous tours include; Canadian Army Deputy G37 for high readiness and collective training within the HQDA Military Personnel Exchange Program, Kingston, Ontario; Commander, 16th Combat Aviation Brigade Ready Reserve, Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington; Operations and Executive Officer for 2nd Battalion, 23rd Infantry, 4th Stryker Brigade Combat Team, Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington with a deployment in support of OEF; Regimental and JSOTF Planner, 75th Ranger Regiment and Ranger Company Commander and Battalion S3 Air, 3rd Ranger Battalion, Fort Benning, GA, with deployments in support of OIF and OEF; HHC and Bravo Company Commander, 1st Battalion, 509th Infantry (Airborne) at Folk Polk, Louisiana; Company Executive Officer and Rifle Platoon Leader, Charlie Company, 3rd Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, Fort Bragg, North Carolina with deployments in support of OEF and OIF. LTC Amburgey has deployed to combat seven times, twice to Iraq and five times to Afghanistan, to include Operation Enduring Freedom I and Operation Iraqi Freedom I and most recently in 2012-13 as a Combined Task Force Executive Officer in Kandahar Provence.

LTC Amburgey’s education includes the Infantry Basic and Captains Career Course, the Joint Firepower Course, the Joint Planners Course, and the Command and General Staff College. He holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Fayetteville State University and a Master of Arts Degree in International Relations from Webster University.

His awards and decorations include the Presidential and Valorous Unit Awards, Bronze Star Medal (4th Award), Meritorious Service Medal (3rd Award), Joint Commendation Medal, the Combat Infantryman’s Badge, Expert Infantryman’s Badge, Master Parachutist Badge, Air Assault Badge, and Ranger Tab. LTC Amburgey is a recipient of the Order of Saint Maurice (Legionnaire).


5th Ranger Training Battalion conducts the Mountain Phase of Ranger School in vicinity of Camp Frank D. Merrill IOT produce Rangers whose primary mission is to close with and destroy the enemy in direct fire battle.
