Brigadier General Larry Q. Burris assumed duties of Chief of Infantry on 6 August 2021. In addition to his responsibilities within the U.S. Army’s Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC), Brigadier General Burris will also serve as the Director for the Soldier Lethality Cross Functional Team (CFT) under the newly established U.S. Army Futures Command (AFC).
BG Larry Burris commissioned as an Infantry Officer through the ROTC program at the Virginia Military Institute. His first duty assignment was with the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) at Fort Campbell where he served as a rifle platoon leader, company executive officer, and battalion S-4 in 3rd Battalion, 187th Infantry and as Aide-de-Camp to the Assistant Division Commander.
Following the Infantry Officer Advanced Course, BG Burris served as the battalion S-4 in 3rd Battalion, 15th Infantry at Fort Stewart and during OPERATION JOINT FORGE in Bosnia. BG Burris commanded Company C, 3rd Battalion, 15th Infantry. In 2002, his company deployed with 1st Battalion, 64th Armor to Kuwait in support of OPERATION DESERT SPRING and to Iraq in support of OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM I. BG Burris later served as a JCS Intern in the Joint Staff J-7 and as a special assistant to the Chief of Staff, Army.
After Command and General Staff College, BG Burris was assigned to Fort Hood where he served as the assistant BCT S-3 for 1st BCT, 4th Infantry Division, battalion S3 for 1st Battalion, 66th Armor and as the BCT S-3 for 1st BCT, 4th Infantry Division at Fort Hood and during OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM 07-09.
Following his first tour with the 4th Infantry Division, BG Burris served as the Aide-de-Camp to the Vice Chief of Staff, Army. BG Burris returned to the 4th Infantry Division and commanded 1st Battalion, 66th Armor from September 2011 to December 2013, deploying in support of OPERATION SPARTAN SHIELD.
BG Burris assumed command of the 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), on 11 December 2015. While in command of the RAKKASANS, the Brigade deployed to Afghanistan in support of OPERATION RESOLUTE SUPPORT and OPERATION FREEDOM’S SENTINEL from October 2016 to July 2017.
Following command, BG Burris was assigned as the Executive Officer to the Deputy Commanding General, US Army Forces Command and then as the Executive Officer to the Secretary of the Army. He then served as the Deputy Commanding General Support for the 3rd Infantry Division. Prior to assuming his current position, he served as the Director, CJ3, Combined Joint Task Force-Operation Inherent Resolve, Iraq. Operation INHERENT RESOLVE, Iraq.
BG Burris holds a Bachelor of Arts in Business/Economics from the Virginia Military Institute, a Master’s in Public Policy Management from Georgetown University, and a Master’s in National Security and Strategic Studies from the Naval War College.
