Automobile Issues

Classic Car

Whether you are buying a new or used car, there are certain rules, rights and laws which you should be aware before walking into any dealership. Oftentimes, unfortunately, Soldiers seek assistance when the papers have already been signed. Then a few months pass by and the Soldier realizes he or she has entered a bad deal. It is important to remember there is no “cooling off period” for automobile sales!

The most beneficial time to seek legal assistance is prior to signing the Truth in Lending Act (TILA) disclosure (the long, thin yellow sheet of paper breaking down monthly payments and interest). Despite what a dealer may tell you, it is perfectly acceptable to have that piece of paper in your hand and walk out with it in order to think things through.

Please review our Fact Sheets related to Automobile Issues to better prepare yourself for leasing, buying and owning your automobile. If you need additional assistance, please make an appointment with an attorney in our office at 706-545-3281/3282. And remember, bring all paperwork related to the sale/lease in order to maximize your time with an attorney.

Also, take advantage of the Army Community Services’ (ACS) seminar entitled “How to Buy a Car without Being Taken For a Ride.” For more information, please call 706-545-7517.
