Cusseta town was one of several major Muscogee (Creek) Indian settlements in this area. The people of Cusseta originally occupied the area where the Cuartels and NCO housing is now, then abandoned it to relocate to central Georgia. They returned around 1715 and settled in the low, flat land at what is now Lawson Army Airfield. The Creek left Georgia for Alabama by 1828 when forced out by encroachments by bad treaties and white settlers.
