The mission of the Master Gunner is to train the unit for combat and act as subject matter expert for all weapon system platforms in the ABCT. The Master Gunner advises commanders at all echelons, and assists with the planning, development, execution, and evaluation of all combat and gunnery-related training (individual, crew, and collective)
Purpose:
Train select noncommissioned officers to advise and assist unit leaders in planning, preparing, executing, and assessing gunnery training programs, train unit combat vehicle crews and leaders
in techniques and procedures to engage the full capability of their weapon platforms in precision direct fire engagements, and support unit level maintenance on Abrams fire control and weapon systems.
Course Scope: Abrams Master Gunner is a 12-week course which utilizes collaborative instruction and experiential learning strategies to train Company Master Gunners, focusing on the following areas: :
MAINTENANCE: Trains maintenance procedures used to identify and troubleshoot complex malfunctions that occur in the tank turret electrical, hydraulic, armament, and fire control systems that inhibits the crew’s ability
to apply the Direct Fire Engagement Process during Large Scale Combat Operations.
GUNNERY: Trains advanced gunnery methodology, doctrinal, and technical procedures needed to assess crew proficiency, identifying crew procedural errors that cause a tank to not hit a target, and provide
training for crews to operate the tank to its design capabilities.
TRAINING MANAGEMENT: Trains training management techniques and procedures (plan, prepare, execute, and assess training) with emphasis on scheduling, resourcing, coordinating, and equipping training
events to improve organizational readiness.
