Armor Basic Officer Leader Course (ABOLC)

Professional Development

Student officers are encouraged to engage in professional development activities throughout the duration of the class.

  1. Professional Reading. The attached professional reading list outlines books and articles identified by senior Army leaders as beneficial to the professional development of Army officers. Although reading of the list is not a mandatory component of A-BOLC, I highly encourage you to develop professionally by reading about the experiences of combat leaders throughout history.
  2. For soldier support information, assisting family members to gain insight into the lives of the U.S. Army soldier, the suggested reading material is: Your Soldier, Your Army, A Parents’ Guide, by Vicki Cody.
Copies of this guide for families can be received for free by calling 1-800-336-4570, ext. 630 or By email at, ilwpublications@ausa.org.
  3. Mentorship Program. During A-BOLC, most lieutenants will have the opportunity to meet and spend time with captains from the Armor Captains Career Course. This is a valuable experience as it enables the lieutenant to ask questions and glean information from captains with experience as platoon leaders and company executive officers in the armor and cavalry force.
